The Mulsi Culture

The Omo River valley in southwest Ethiopia, just north of the Kenyan border, is home to the Mursi tribe. The custom of women wearing big plates of their lower lips is well-known among the Mursi tribe. This is meant to symbolize a woman's ability to conceive and her readiness for marriage. A female member of the community uses a stick and a wooden plate to cut a girl's lower lip when she reaches puberty. A woman is deemed more beautiful if the wooden plate is larger. Women from the Mursi tribe are also subjected to body scarring as a symbol of their beauty and strength. They cut the skin with thorny branches or razor blades and then apply ash to the wound to produce the scars they like.
